Using alternative forms of communication with young children

Our Lightning lesson Using alternative forms of communication with young children explores some alternative ways young children might communicate if they struggle to talk using words and sentences. Examples include sign language and powered devices. This lesson will build your confidence to support young children who use alternative forms of communication. 

Intended audience

Staff working with children from birth to age five in early years settings, including nurseries, childminders and reception classes in primary schools.

This Lightning lesson will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Pre-requisite Knowledge

This Lightning lesson is part of our “going further” series. It is assumed that professionals have either completed Introduction to speech, language and communication course on the Speech and Language UK Learning Centre, or have equivalent knowledge and skills gained through other formal or informal learning, and/or relevant experience working with children.
