Intended audience
Staff working with children and babies from birth to three years old in early years settings, including nurseries and childminders.
Course structure
This module is the first of two modules in the course ‘Working with under threes’. We recommend that when you have completed this module you move onto Working with under threes 2: Speech and language challenges.
Time commitments
The module will take approximately one hour to complete. You can complete the module at your own pace and in your own time.
Pre-requisite Knowledge
No prior knowledge is needed. However, the content is targeted at staff who have some experience working with young children in the early years.

By completing this module you will:
• know how babies learn to communicate and why communication skills are so important
• be able to describe the typical ages and stages of early communication development
• understand the links between the development of play and communication skills
• know what a communication-supportive environment is, including some practical ways for supporting early communication skills.
