
Working with families 2: Supporting families of children with speech and language challenges
Our module Working with families 2: Supporting families of children with speech and language challenges explores how you can support families of babies and young children who have speech and language challenges.
Intended audience
Staff working with children from birth to age five in early years settings, including nurseries, childminders and reception classes in primary schools.
Course structure
This is the second part of the course ‘Working with families’. We recommend that if you have not yet completed Working with families 1, you start with that part of the course.
Time commitments
The module will take approximately one hour to complete. You can complete the module at your own pace and in your own time.
Pre-requisite Knowledge
No prior knowledge is needed. However, the content is targeted at staff who have some experience working with children in the early years.

By completing this module you will:
- know some practical ways to involve families in each stage of the graduated approach: assess, plan, do, review
- understand the potential impact on families when their child is identified as having speech and language challenges
- know some practical ways to involve and support bilingual families when their child has speech and language challenges
- be able to signpost families of children with speech and language challenges to resources and activities that will support their communication development.
